I’m incredibly excited that we are just a little more than a month away from the release of my newest book: The Next In Line to Lead: The Voice of the Assistant Principal. I feature nine amazing assistant principals from California, Georgia, Maryland, New Jersey, South Carolina, and Texas. You will learn how they are preparing to be “Next In Line to Lead ” in their role as assistant principals.
My academic and research interests are principal preparation and leadership development. I am always intrigued to talk to aspiring leaders, assistant principals, aspiring principals and novice principals. School districts vary in how they prepare their leaders and aspiring leaders. It is my hope to be able to continue my research through the Next In Line to Lead Book Series.
My dissertation is also on the topic of principal preparation. This really is what sparked my interest in learning more globally around the topic of principal preparation and leadership development. The role of the assistant principal has evolved over the last decade. We no longer expect the assistant principal to simply be the disciplinarian, in charge of substitutes, monitoring buses and lunch shifts in the cafeteria. Assistant principals are instructional leaders and have an integral role in the professional development for teachers, engaging in instructional learning walks and assisting in building a positive school culture.
The support of the assistant principal is crucial to the effectiveness of a principal. As a former principal, I have experienced both, assistant principals, who have been reliable and supportive and then one who did everything possible to sabotage my efforts. Nevertheless, you move forward as a leader and do what it is that you have to do to keep the students’ best interest in the forefront and keep instruction as a priority.
